Discovering Tobacco Usage and Behaviors in Nevada
Client: University of Nevada, Las Vegas
Project Title: 2021 Nevada Tobacco Usage Survey Study
Background
Every three years, the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, in partnership with the Nevada Institute for Children's Research and Policy, conducts a statewide quantitative survey study of tobacco usage among Nevadans. The findings are published in a report, detailing the changes in tobacco habits among residents, along with implications of the findings for the future.
The Problem
In 2021, the Tobacco Usage Survey Study was to be fielded for its tri-annual reporting period. However, due to changes in local market research service providers, the previous vendors who had fielded the survey on behalf of UNLV were unavailable for the project. As a result, a new fielding partner was needed, and our team was tapped to help with the project.
Methodology
To begin, we first programmed both English and Spanish-speaking version of the survey, as well as updated any questions as needed based on changes from the previous iteration. Using our experience fielding research to Nevada residents, We then utilized a phone-based fielding methodology, fielding the survey to more than 800 Nevadans over a two month period. Finally, the data was reviewed and checked for accuracy, and cross-tabulation reports were developed to better understand the real role tobacco plays in the lives of Nevadans.
The Result
As a result of our work on this project, UNLV was able to publish a cutting-edge market research report, detailing the findings of the in-depth analysis of Nevada’s tobacco usage habits. The results were statistically relevant at the 95% confidence level and have since been cited by myriad local health entities to make more informed decisions about health habits of residents of the Silver State. From this, we intend to field the same study again in 2024 on behalf of UNLV and the Nevada Institute for Children's Research and Policy.
